Abandoned Cart SMS: Templates, Timing and Compliance (2026)

An article by

Founder

Abandoned cart SMS is a short text, sent 30 minutes to a few hours after a shopper leaves checkout, with one link that reopens their cart. It gets read within minutes, and in the US it is only legal with prior express written consent. Below: mechanism, timing, eight templates, compliance rules, and setup on Shopify, Klaviyo, Postscript and Attentive.

How abandoned cart SMS works

Five steps, each a place the flow can break.

  1. Trigger. The shopper enters a phone number at checkout and leaves without paying. Shopify records an abandoned checkout, which Klaviyo, Postscript and Attentive read as a Started Checkout event. A cart that never reached checkout has no number and cannot trigger anything.

  2. Consent check. The flow filters to profiles with SMS marketing consent on file. No consent, no text.

  3. Send. From a 10DLC number or short code registered to your brand. Brand name first, one link, opt-out instruction on the first message.

  4. Link back to the cart. Shopify's recovery URL or the platform's checkout link, which reopens the checkout with items and details restored. Add UTM parameters so the order is not attributed to "direct".

  5. Reply handling. STOP is handled by the platform. Everything else lands in an inbox, and if nobody reads it the question that stopped the buyer goes unanswered. Decide before launch who, or what, replies.

Timing: what to send at 30 minutes, 4 hours and 24 hours

Three texts per cart is the ceiling. Each has a different job.

30 minutes: the reminder

No discount, no urgency. The shopper was probably interrupted. Name, brand, saved cart, link, opt-out line. Earlier than 30 minutes catches people still comparing shipping in another tab.

4 hours: the objection or the question

Either something on the page put them off or they had a question. Answer the objection your checkout analytics point to (shipping, sizing, price) in one line, or ask what stopped them and make sure someone answers.

24 hours: the offer or the close

If you discount at all, this is the slot: first orders only, single-use code, real expiry. If you do not, make it a plain last text and stop. Whatever the delay, quiet hours should hold a text that would land at 11pm until the next morning.

8 abandoned cart SMS templates

Each is 160 characters or fewer with placeholders filled in at normal lengths, so it sends as one segment. Brand name first, one link, one ask.

1. First nudge

[Brand]: Hi Sam, your cart is saved. Finish checkout here: [link]. Reply STOP to opt out, HELP for help.

The 30-minute text for everyone. Opt-out line on the first message of every conversation.

2. The question

[Brand]: Sam, did something stop you at checkout? Reply here and a real person will answer today. Your cart: [link]

Only if replies are read within the hour. An unanswered "what stopped you?" is worse than no text.

3. Shipping objection

[Brand]: Shipping on your order is free and arrives in 2 to 4 days, tracked. Your cart is still here: [link]

The 4-hour text when checkout analytics show the drop at the shipping step.

4. Sizing objection

[Brand]: Not sure on size? Exchanges are free both ways for 60 days. The Trail Runner runs half a size small. Cart: [link]

Apparel and footwear. Say the one size-guide line that matters.

5. Discount, 24 hours

[Brand]: Last one from us. 10% off your cart with FIRST10 until midnight tonight, first orders only: [link]

Filter out anyone with a previous order. Single-use code in Shopify Discounts.

6. Low stock

[Brand]: Heads up, the Oat cardigan in M is down to 3 units and we don't restock this colour. Your cart: [link]

Only when a live inventory condition on the flow makes it true.

7. Failed payment

[Brand]: Your payment didn't go through and nothing was charged. Retry, or use PayPal or Shop Pay here: [link]

A separate flow on the payment-failure event, sent within 15 minutes. The highest-intent contact you will ever text.

8. Reply handling

The customer texts back: "does it come in blue?"

Yes, the Field Jacket comes in Navy and Olive, both in stock in M. Here's your cart with Navy swapped in: [link]

Answer, then hand back the link. Whoever replies needs catalogue access, not just a script.

Compliance: consent, quiet hours and 10DLC

The conservative reading for US recipients. This is not legal advice, confirm it with counsel.

  • Prior express written consent. Marketing texts to US mobile numbers require it under the TCPA. Collect it at checkout with a clear disclosure next to the phone field: you will send marketing texts, consent is not a condition of purchase, here is how to opt out. The box is never pre-ticked.

  • AI voice calls need the same consent. The FCC's February 2024 ruling treats AI-generated voices as artificial or prerecorded, so a cart-recovery call from a voice agent needs prior express written consent exactly as a marketing text does.

  • Honor STOP and HELP. STOP ends marketing texts immediately with one confirmation and nothing after it. HELP returns your brand name and a contact method. Your platform handles both, check after every sender-number change.

  • Quiet hours. The federal window is 8am to 9pm in the recipient's local time. Some states are stricter (Florida is the usual example), so set quiet hours to the tightest state you sell into.

  • 10DLC registration. Application-to-person texting from a standard 10-digit US number requires registering your brand and campaign with the carriers through your platform. Unregistered traffic gets filtered. Allow a couple of weeks before launch.

  • Transactional is different from marketing. An order confirmation is transactional. "Your cart is waiting, here's 10% off" is marketing. Do not send marketing content under a transactional consent, or blend the two in one message.

Setting it up on Shopify, Klaviyo, Postscript or Attentive

Shopify

Shopify's own abandoned checkout automation is email only. What Shopify gives you is the consent capture: in your checkout settings you can add an SMS marketing opt-in with editable disclosure text, which syncs to whichever SMS platform you connect. Set it up first, unticked by default.

Klaviyo

In your flow builder, create a flow on the Started Checkout trigger, add a conditional split on SMS consent, then the SMS steps with the delays above. Quiet hours are an account-level setting and the sending number is registered for 10DLC in the platform. Add a Placed Order filter so buyers drop out.

Postscript

A Shopify-native SMS tool with the abandoned cart automation preset on the Started Checkout trigger, compliance handling (STOP, HELP, quiet hours, 10DLC) built in, and a shared inbox for replies, the part most stores forget to staff.

Attentive

The enterprise option: the same flow, a heavier consent capture toolkit, and a two-way inbox. Worth it when SMS is a primary channel with a dedicated owner.

Whichever you pick, run one SMS abandoned cart flow. Two platforms on the same trigger is how customers get texted twice in an hour and reply STOP to both.

When a text is not enough

A text can remind and answer one line of objection. It cannot carry a conversation about whether the product is right for someone, and it does nothing for the person who swiped the notification away. Those carts go to a phone call, and the mechanics are on our abandoned cart recovery page: the CRM posts the abandon event by webhook, an AI voice agent calls promptly in the brand's name, answers questions and gives the code, leaves a voicemail with the code if nobody answers, and a text with the cart link follows from a 10DLC number registered to the brand, with replies handled by the same agent.

One telehealth brand running Exerta this way sees 3.4% recovery on carts where nobody was reached, 4.9% after a voicemail with the code, and 10.2% after a live conversation. Purchases that follow contact come fast: 61% land within an hour of the voicemail or call. Run SMS for everyone with consent, and add the call for the carts worth a conversation.

FAQ

Is abandoned cart SMS legal in the US?

Yes, with prior express written consent collected before the first marketing text, STOP honored, sends kept inside quiet hours, and a sender number registered through 10DLC. Without consent it is not legal, and the platform's consent filter is your safeguard. This is not legal advice, confirm with counsel.

How long should an abandoned cart text be?

160 characters or fewer so it sends as one segment and reads in one glance. Brand name first, the customer's first name, one link, one ask, and the opt-out instruction on the first message. If the objection answer does not fit in that space, it belongs in an email.

How many abandoned cart texts should I send?

Two or three per cart, never more. A reminder at about 30 minutes, an objection or question at about 4 hours, and an offer or close at about 24 hours. Exit the flow the moment an order is placed, and suppress anyone who got the sequence in the last 30 days.

What is a good SMS abandoned cart recovery rate?

No universal figure is trustworthy. It depends on how many abandoners opted in, your price point and your traffic. Measure recovered orders per 100 texted carts against a holdout group that got no text, and count only the difference as the lift the channel earned.
