A good abandoned cart text message names the brand, names the customer, makes one ask, and fits in 160 characters with a link back to the cart. Here are 20 you can adapt, grouped by the scenario that triggers them, each with a one-line note on when to use it.
20 abandoned cart text message examples
Every message is 160 characters or fewer with placeholders filled in, so it sends as one segment. All assume SMS marketing consent was given at checkout and your number is registered with the carriers.
First nudge
[Brand]: Hi Sam, your cart is saved. Finish checkout here: [link]. Reply STOP to opt out, HELP for help.
Use when: 30 minutes after abandonment, for everyone. The opt-out line goes on the first message of any conversation.
[Brand]: Sam, the Cloud Knit Cardigan in Oat is still in your cart, details already filled in: [link]
Use when: You want the product named. Pull the first line item from the checkout event.
[Brand]: Left something behind? Your cart is saved for 7 days, no rush: [link]. Questions? Just reply.
Use when: Replies are staffed within the hour. Never invite a reply you cannot answer.
Objection handling: shipping, price, sizing
[Brand]: Shipping on your order is free and arrives in 2 to 4 days, tracked. Your cart is still here: [link]
Use when: Checkout analytics show the drop at the shipping step. Send at about 4 hours.
[Brand]: The Field Jacket is $220 because it is made in Porto and we repair it for life. Pay in 4 at checkout: [link]
Use when: The item is over $150 and you offer instalments. Justify the price, then remove the lump sum.
[Brand]: Not sure on size? Free exchanges both ways for 60 days. The Trail Runner runs half a size small. Cart: [link]
Use when: Apparel or footwear. Say the one thing from the size guide that matters.
Discount
[Brand]: Last one from us. 10% off your cart with FIRST10 until midnight tonight, first orders only: [link]
Use when: The last text in the sequence, about 24 hours, filtered to people with no previous order.
[Brand]: We'll cover shipping on your cart if you order today. Code SHIPFREE at checkout: [link]
Use when: You would rather give away shipping than margin. Cheaper than 10% on most carts over $60.
Last chance
[Brand]: Your saved cart clears tonight at midnight. Grab it or let it go, no more texts either way: [link]
Use when: You do not discount. Honest close, then the flow ends.
[Brand]: Final reminder, the FIRST10 code on your cart expires in 3 hours: [link]
Use when: A code went out earlier and the expiry is real. Never if the code still works tomorrow.
Low stock
[Brand]: Heads up, the Oat cardigan in M is down to 3 units and we don't restock this colour. Your cart: [link]
Use when: A live inventory condition on the flow makes it true. Never as a template line.
Failed payment
[Brand]: Your payment didn't go through and nothing was charged. Retry, or use PayPal or Shop Pay here: [link]
Use when: Within 15 minutes of a declined card. This buyer had already decided to pay.
[Brand]: Still stuck at payment? Reply here and we'll sort it live, or try another card: [link]
Use when: Two hours after the first failed-payment text with no order, only if someone can help live.
After a voicemail
[Brand]: Hi Sam, just left you a voicemail. Your code is FIRST10, cart link here: [link]. Reply if you have questions.
Use when: A recovery call went to voicemail. Send within a couple of minutes so the two arrive together.
[Brand]: Missed you on the phone. Nothing urgent, your cart is saved and the code in the voicemail works until Sunday: [link]
Use when: A softer follow-up the next morning if the first text got no click.
Reply handling when the customer texts back a question
The customer replies: "Does it ship to Canada?"
Yes, we ship to Canada, 5 to 8 days, duties included at checkout so there is nothing to pay on delivery. Your cart: [link]
Use when: A logistics question. Answer it fully, then hand the link back.
The customer replies: "Is it worth it for sensitive skin?"
The Everyday Serum is fragrance-free and most of our sensitive-skin reviews are 5 stars. Returns are free for 30 days if it's not for you: [link]
Use when: An "is it right for me" question. Facts from the catalogue plus the risk reversal.
The customer replies: "Can I change the size to a medium?"
Done, swapped the Trail Runner to a medium. Same cart, updated: [link]
Use when: A change request. Make the change, confirm it, send the updated link rather than instructions.
Subscription or reorder
[Brand]: You picked one-time for the Daily Greens. Subscribe is 15% off, any frequency, cancel in one tap: [link]
Use when: The abandoned cart contains a one-time purchase of a product you sell on subscription.
[Brand]: Sam, your last Daily Greens order was 28 days ago. Reorder in one tap, same address, same card: [link]
Use when: A consumable is due to run out and no cart exists yet. The link builds one.
Rules that make these work
Name the customer. First name from the checkout event. A text without a name reads like a broadcast.
Brand first. The brand name opens every message so the recipient knows who is texting before deciding whether to read on.
One link. To the checkout with the cart and details restored, with UTM parameters, and the only URL in the message.
One ask. Finish checkout, or reply, or use the code. Not all three.
Opt-out on the first message. STOP to opt out and HELP for help, with STOP honored immediately. Consent was collected at checkout, unticked by default.
Timing inside quiet hours. Roughly 30 minutes, 4 hours and 24 hours, two or three texts, then stop. The platform holds anything that would land outside 8am to 9pm in the recipient's local time (stricter in some states). Not legal advice, confirm with counsel.
When to pick up the phone instead
A text works for the shopper who was interrupted and for a single line of objection. It does not work for the shopper with a real question about whether the product is right for them, or the one who swiped the notification away. For those carts a call first and a text second recovers more, and the mechanics are on our abandoned cart recovery page. The gap is not small: one telehealth brand running Exerta recovers 3.4% of carts where nobody was reached, 4.9% when the call went to voicemail with the code and the text followed, and 10.2% when the customer picked up, roughly three times the baseline. The "after a voicemail" examples above are the text half of that pairing.
FAQ
How long should an abandoned cart text message be?
160 characters or fewer so it sends as one segment and reads in a single glance on a lock screen. If the objection you need to answer does not fit, it belongs in the email step, and the text becomes a short pointer back to the cart.
When should the first abandoned cart text go out?
About 30 minutes after the checkout was abandoned. Earlier catches people who are still deciding in another tab. Later than a couple of hours and the phone is in a pocket and the intent has cooled. Whatever the delay, the platform's quiet-hours setting should hold anything that would land late at night.
Can I text someone who abandoned without giving a phone number?
No. A cart that never reached the contact step of checkout has no phone number attached and nothing to trigger a text, and a number with no marketing consent cannot be texted either. Those carts fall to email if you have an address, or to on-site recovery before the shopper leaves.
What do I do when a customer replies with a question?
Answer it, then hand back the cart link, as in the reply-handling examples above. The reply needs to come within minutes while the phone is still in hand, which means either a staffed inbox during the hours you send, or an agent with catalogue access that answers on your behalf.
