32 Post-Purchase Survey Questions (By Goal)

An article by

Myko M.

Founder

The best post-purchase survey questions are short, tied to one goal, and asked at the moment the buyer can actually answer them. Below are 32 questions grouped by goal, each with a line on why it works, when to ask it and what to do with the answer.

32 post-purchase survey questions by goal

Do not run all 32. Pick the group that matches this quarter's problem.

Attribution (5)

  • How did you hear about us? Platform attribution cannot see podcasts or word of mouth. Ask on the confirmation page, compare against Meta and GA monthly.

  • Which of these did you see before buying? A multi-select follow-up. The first question captures first touch, this one the assists.

  • How long ago did you first hear about us? Shows how long awareness spend takes to become orders before you cut a channel that "isn't converting".

  • What made you decide to buy today rather than earlier? Payday, a code, a restock, a creator post. Time retargeting around the trigger.

  • Did someone recommend us? Who, or where? A recurring name is a referral partner you have not met yet.

Why they bought and what nearly stopped them (5)

  • What almost stopped you from buying? The highest-value question here. Ask on the confirmation page, then fix the top answer on the product page, in ad comments and in chat.

  • What was the main reason you chose us? The most common answer is your ad hook and belongs in the first line of the product page.

  • Which other brands or products did you consider? Names your real competitive set, for comparison pages and chat objection handling.

  • What problem are you hoping this solves? The job to be done, in the buyer's words. Group the answers and you have segments.

  • Was there anything on the product page you could not find? Each answer becomes an FAQ entry.

Product expectations and fit (4)

  • What do you expect this product to do for you? Ask before delivery, compare with the 14-day answers. The gap is where returns start.

  • How confident are you that you picked the right size or variant? A 1 to 5 scale. A 1 or 2 gets a size check from a person before dispatch.

  • Which detail mattered most when you were choosing? Material, colour, compatibility, scent. Lead with it in photos and variant names.

  • Did the product match the photos and description? Ask on delivery day. A "no" is a return in waiting and the reason is a product page fix.

Checkout and delivery experience (4)

  • How easy was checkout, from 1 to 5? Follow a low score with "what was hard?" and fix the answer.

  • Did your order arrive when you expected it to? Not "was it fast". Late against the promise is what people complain about.

  • How was the packaging and the condition on arrival? Carrier and packaging problems show up here months before they reach your return reasons.

  • Did you get enough updates between ordering and delivery? A "no" means add a dispatch message and a day-before message.

First use and onboarding (4)

  • Have you used it yet? Ask three days after delivery. A "no" ends the survey and triggers a first-use tip.

  • Was anything unclear when you first set it up or used it? Repeated confusion about one step is a packaging insert, not a support macro.

  • Did anything surprise you, good or bad? Good surprises are testimonial copy. Bad ones are expectation gaps to close.

  • Is there anything you wish you had known before you bought? The most honest product page feedback you will get.

Return risk and remorse signals (4)

  • Is anything wrong with your order? Yes or no, by text on delivery day. A "yes" goes to a person within the hour. This turns refunds into exchanges.

  • Are you thinking about returning or exchanging anything? Day three. Asking does not plant the idea, it catches people already deciding while a swap is still easy.

  • How does it compare to what you expected, from 1 to 5? A 1 or 2 with the reason attached is your buyer's remorse early warning.

  • Do you feel it was worth what you paid? Price regret is separate from product regret, and the fix is value framing, not a discount.

Loyalty and reorder (3)

  • How likely are you to buy from us again, 0 to 10? Ask at 14 days and track by acquisition channel. A channel whose buyers never reorder is dearer than its CAC suggests.

  • What would make you order again sooner? A subscription, a bundle, a refill reminder. Feeds straight into replenishment timing.

  • Would you recommend us to a friend? Why or why not? The "why not" is the part worth reading. It is usually one specific, fixable thing.

Open-ended (3)

  • If you could change one thing about your experience, what would it be? One thing, not "any feedback". The constraint produces a specific answer.

  • What is the one thing we should never change? Tells you what you are actually selling. Protect it.

  • Anything else you want to tell us? Always last, always optional. The few who answer deserve a personal reply.

When to send each group

Ask about attribution a week after delivery and you get "I don't remember". Ask about first use on the confirmation page and you get nothing.

  • Order confirmation page. Attribution, purchase reasons and what nearly stopped them, expectations and fit. The buyer is still on your site and memory is freshest, so response rates peak here.

  • Delivery day. "Is anything wrong with your order?" plus the delivery and packaging questions. A text beats email here because the parcel is in their hands.

  • Three days after delivery. First use, anything unclear, return or exchange intent. Returns are decided in this window, so this send pays for the programme.

  • Fourteen days after delivery. Reorder likelihood, recommendation and the open-ended questions. By now the product is a habit or in a drawer.

How to keep the survey short

One to three questions per moment, picked by goal. If this quarter's goal is a lower return rate, ask "what almost stopped you?" at confirmation, "is anything wrong?" on delivery day and "are you thinking about returning anything?" at day three. If it is attribution, ask "how did you hear about us?" plus the multi-select on the confirmation page and stop.

  • Lead with a one-tap question. Put the open text box second and make it optional.

  • Use conditional logic. A "no" to "have you used it yet?" ends the survey.

  • Match the tool to the moment. Thank-you page apps in the Fairing and KnoCommerce category handle the confirmation page. A Typeform or Google Forms link in the shipping email is free and fine for delivery questions. At day three and fourteen, a one-question text gets read, an email survey mostly does not.

Turning answers into fewer returns

A survey only reduces returns if something happens to the answer within the hour. "The sleeves are too long" is a return if it sits in a spreadsheet until Friday, and an exchange if a person replies with a size swap that afternoon. Route by answer, not by schedule.

The second loop is slower but bigger. Take the top three answers to "what almost stopped you?" and put them where the next buyer sees them before they hesitate: the product page, the pinned comment under the ad, the first suggested question in chat.

Exerta's post-purchase surveys run both loops automatically: each buyer is asked by text what nearly stopped them and whether anything is wrong, problems are routed to a person before they turn into a refund or return, and the answers feed the brand's other agents so the next buyer hears the answer first. The post-purchase survey guide covers the setup, including the manual version with Klaviyo and a shared inbox.

FAQ

How many questions should a post-purchase survey have?

One to three per touchpoint, and rarely more than eight across the whole journey. Completion drops sharply after the first question, so lead with a one-tap answer and make the free-text box optional. Spread anything more across the four moments above.

What is the best question to ask after a purchase?

"What almost stopped you from buying?" It exposes the objection that nearly cost you the sale, in the buyer's own words, while they still remember it. The answers tell you what to fix on the product page and what ad comments and chat should answer first.

When should I send post-purchase survey questions?

Attribution and purchase-reason questions go on the order confirmation page. "Is anything wrong?" goes out on delivery day. First-use and return-intent questions go out three days after delivery, loyalty questions at fourteen. Sending everything in one email a week after delivery is the most common mistake.

Should post-purchase surveys be anonymous?

No. Tie every answer to the order so you can act on it. An anonymous "the sleeves are too long" is a data point, a named one is an exchange you can offer today. Say in the message that a real person reads problem answers.
