How to Set Up Comment-to-DM Automation on Instagram
Comment-to-DM automation sends a private message the moment someone comments on your post or ad. Instagram has no native version, so here is how to set it up through Meta's API, step by step, and the rules that keep it working.

What comment-to-DM automation does
Someone comments on your post or ad. Within seconds they receive a private message from you: the link they asked for, the answer to their question, or a question back that qualifies them. Optionally, a public reply appears under their comment too. Instagram has no native version of this, so it runs through a tool connected to Meta's official API. This guide covers the prerequisites, the setup steps that are the same in every tool, and the rules that keep it working.
Before you start
A professional Instagram account (Business or Creator) connected to a Facebook Page you manage.
Message access enabled in Instagram's settings so connected tools can read and send DMs.
A tool built on Meta's official API. It will connect through Meta's login screen, never by asking for your Instagram password.
A clear idea of the one outcome you want from the first automation: link delivery, a sizing answer, a lead captured, or a complaint routed.
Choose your tool
Scripted chatbot builders such as ManyChat run a flow you design from a keyword trigger; they suit giveaways and link delivery. Flat-rate creator tools do the keyword-to-link job cheaply and nothing else. AI agents such as Exerta read what the comment actually says, decide whether to reply publicly, DM, hide, or escalate, answer in your brand voice with the link or the price, and report the revenue each conversation recovered, across Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. The Instagram DM automation tool comparison explains the trade-offs.
How to set up comment-to-DM automation, step by step
Connect the account. In the tool, choose Instagram and log in through Meta's screen. Grant access to comments and messages for the Page linked to your Instagram account.
Pick the scope. A specific post or ad, a set of posts, or every post. Start with one post or one ad so you can watch it work.
Choose the trigger. A keyword ("LINK", "PRICE", "YES"), any comment at all, or, in an AI tool, the intent of the comment (a question, a purchase signal, a complaint). Keywords are predictable; intent catches the buyers who did not follow your instruction.
Write the public reply. Optional, but it shows other readers you respond and tells the commenter to check their inbox: "Sent you a DM!" Keep it short.
Write the DM. Acknowledge, deliver, and invite the next step: "Thanks for asking! Here's the [product] you commented on: [link]. Want help with sizing?" For a lead flow, ask one qualifying question before the link.
Add a follow-up. If there is no reply within a set time, send one more message inside the 24-hour window. Make it useful, not a nag: a reminder of the offer or an answer to the most common objection.
Set escalation rules. Complaints, refund requests, and anything sensitive go to a person with the transcript attached. In an AI tool, define what must never be answered automatically.
Test it. Comment from a second account and check the public reply, the DM, the timing, and the follow-up. Then turn it on for the post and watch the first hour.
Rules that keep it working
The person acts first. Comment-to-DM is allowed because the comment is the person's action. You cannot message people who did not engage.
The 24-hour window. Automated messages can be sent within 24 hours of the person's last interaction. Each reply from them resets it. See the 24-hour DM window explained.
Requests folder. If the person does not follow you, your first DM may land in their Requests. A public reply telling them to check their inbox raises the open rate.
Pace during spikes. The API rate-limits automated messages; a good tool queues rather than fails. Plan for a viral post to take longer to work through, not to break.
Be clearly automated, with a way out. Meta's policies expect automated conversations to be recognisable as such and to hand off when someone asks for a human.
What to measure
DMs sent per comment, and how many were opened and replied to.
Clicks on the link and, if your tool supports it, orders attributed to the conversation.
Escalations, and how long people waited for a human.
Comments that did not trigger anything. If buyers are asking questions in ways your keyword missed, switch the trigger to intent.
Three automations to build first
Link delivery on a product post. Trigger on a keyword or on any question about the product; DM the link with one line of context.
Objection handling under an ad. Trigger on questions about price, shipping, or "is this legit"; reply publicly with the short answer and DM the detail.
Complaint routing. Trigger on negative sentiment; reply publicly with an apology, DM to collect the order number, escalate to support with the transcript.
Where Exerta fits
Exerta runs comment-to-DM on intent rather than keywords: every comment on your Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok posts and ads is read, buyers get a DM with the link and the price in your brand voice, spam and negativity are hidden before the next reader sees them, complaints go to your team, and quiet conversations get a follow-up inside the window. Live run logs show every message and why it was sent, and revenue attribution shows what each conversation was worth. The free plan covers 100 AI actions a month on one page with no card.
Frequently asked questions
Can Instagram send a DM when someone comments, natively? No. Meta Business Suite offers instant replies and FAQs for DMs only. Comment-to-DM needs a tool built on Meta's API.
Does comment-to-DM work on ads? Yes, on Instagram and Facebook ads, as long as the tool has access to the ad's comments through the connected Page.
Is it safe? Yes, through the official API and within the rules above. Tools that log in with your password are the unsafe kind.
Do I need a keyword? Scripted tools do. AI tools can trigger on what the comment means, which catches the buyers who typed a question instead of the keyword.
