What Instagram can auto-reply to on its own
Instagram's native automation lives in Meta Business Suite and covers direct messages only: an instant reply to first-time messages, an away message outside business hours, and tappable frequently asked questions. Comments have no native auto-reply. To reply to comments automatically, or to send a DM when someone comments, you need a tool built on Meta's official API. This guide covers both.
Before you start
Switch to a professional account (Business or Creator) in Instagram settings.
Connect the Instagram account to a Facebook Page you manage. Meta Business Suite requires it.
In Instagram settings, allow access to messages so Business Suite and connected tools can read and send DMs.
How to set up an instant reply for DMs
Open Meta Business Suite on desktop or in the app and select the Page connected to your Instagram account.
Go to Inbox, then Automations.
Choose Instant reply and turn it on for Instagram.
Write a short message that confirms you received the DM and sets an expectation, for example: "Thanks for reaching out. We reply within the hour during business hours."
Save. The instant reply sends once, on the first message a person sends you.
How to set up an away message
In the same Automations panel, choose Away message.
Set the hours you are unavailable, for example evenings and weekends.
Write the message and include when the person can expect a real reply.
Turn it on for Instagram and save.
Use the away message honestly. Telling someone you will answer in the morning and then doing so builds more trust than a vague "we'll get back to you."
How to set up frequently asked questions
In Automations, choose Frequently asked questions.
Add up to a handful of questions people actually send you: shipping times, sizing, returns, where to buy.
Write the answer for each and include the relevant link.
Enable for Instagram. New conversations show the questions as tappable buttons.
How to use saved replies in the Instagram app
Saved replies are shortcuts, not automation, but they cut response time for a human team. In the Instagram app, open your professional dashboard, find Saved replies, and create a shortcut word for each canned answer. Typing the shortcut in a DM inserts the full reply.
How to auto-reply to Instagram comments
There is no native switch for this, so the steps happen inside a third-party tool connected through Meta's API. The workflow is the same in most tools:
Connect your Instagram professional account through the tool's official Meta login. Never give a tool your Instagram password.
Choose the trigger: a keyword in a comment, any comment on a specific post or ad, or any comment at all.
Choose the action: a public reply, a private DM, hiding the comment, or a combination.
Write the reply or, on an AI tool, describe your brand voice and connect your product information so the answer fits the question.
Set escalation rules so complaints, refund requests, and anything sensitive go to a person.
Test on one post or one ad before turning it on everywhere.
Scripted chatbot builders such as ManyChat handle keyword triggers well. AI platforms such as Exerta read what the commenter actually asked, answer in your brand voice with the link or price, decide whether to reply publicly or move to a DM, and hide spam or abuse on the same post. See the Instagram DM automation tool comparison to pick one.
Rules that apply to every auto-reply
Automated DMs can only be sent within 24 hours of a person messaging you or interacting with your message. After that, the conversation needs the person to re-engage. Read the 24-hour DM window explained.
No cold DMs. Automation reacts to something the person did; it never starts a conversation with a stranger.
Make it easy to reach a human. Meta's policies and your customers both expect it.
Keep public replies short and move private details, such as order numbers, into DMs.
What to write
An auto-reply that works has three parts: acknowledge, answer or set expectations, and point to the next step. "Thanks for the question! The black version restocks Friday. Want us to DM you when it's live?" acknowledges, answers, and invites a DM where you can capture the sale. Avoid replies that only say "Thanks for your comment," which read as automated and invite more spam. For more examples, see Instagram welcome message templates that convert.
How to know it is working
Median time to first reply on comments and DMs, especially on ads.
Share of conversations that get a real answer versus a generic acknowledgment.
Escalations that reached a person, and how long they waited.
Orders or leads that started from a comment or DM. If your tool cannot show this, you are measuring activity rather than results.
Where Exerta fits
Meta's native tools handle a greeting and an away message. Exerta handles everything after that: every comment and DM on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and your website answered in seconds in your brand voice, spam and negativity hidden before it hurts your ads, buyers moved from comments into DMs, and quiet conversations followed up. Live run logs show every reply and why it was sent, and revenue attribution shows what those replies were worth. The free plan lets you run it on one page with no card.
Frequently asked questions
Can I auto-reply to comments without a third-party tool? No. Instagram only offers native automation for DMs. Comment replies and comment-to-DM require a tool connected through Meta's API.
Will auto-replies get my account banned? Not when they run through the official API and follow the messaging window rules. Tools that log in with your password to act like a human are the ones that trigger restrictions.
Should every comment get a reply? No. Buyer questions and genuine praise deserve replies. Spam and abuse should be hidden. Off-topic chatter can be left alone. A good tool makes that decision per comment instead of replying to everything.
