Instagram Hidden Words: Comment Spam Guide

Instagram Hidden Words can filter offensive language, spam, scams, and custom phrases. Brands still need a second layer for context, buyer questions, DMs, and sensitive escalations.

What Instagram Hidden Words does

Hidden Words is Instagram’s native filtering system for unwanted comments and message requests. According to the current Instagram Help Center guidance, it can automatically hide commonly offensive language, apply advanced comment filtering, and use a custom list of words, phrases, numbers, and emojis.

For brands, that is a valuable baseline. Obvious slurs, repetitive promotion, and familiar scam phrases do not need a human decision every time. The feature reduces the amount of junk a community or paid-social team has to see.

It is still a filter, not a full comment operation. It does not know which product a shopper is asking about, whether a negative phrase is a genuine complaint, or whether a public question should become a private sales conversation. Those jobs need context and routing.

How to set up Instagram Hidden Words

Instagram’s labels can move between app versions, but the current path begins in Settings under the controls for how others can interact with you. Open Hidden Words, then review the automatic, advanced, message-request, and custom-list options separately.

  1. Open the Instagram account’s Settings and find How others can interact with you.

  2. Select Hidden Words.

  3. Confirm that automatic comment hiding matches the brand’s risk tolerance.

  4. Turn on advanced comment filtering if you want broader protection from likely spam and offensive phrases.

  5. Decide whether suspicious or offensive message requests should move to the hidden requests folder.

  6. Create a custom list for brand-specific spam phrases, numbers, emojis, and recurring scam patterns.

  7. Review hidden comments before expanding the list further.

Instagram states that automatic comment hiding is on by default, while advanced comment filtering and hidden message requests may be off by default. Do not assume every account has the same toggles enabled. Audit the actual business account.

What Instagram’s filters hide

There are four distinct controls, and they solve different problems. Treating them as one switch makes it harder to diagnose why a comment disappeared or why spam still got through.

  • Automatic comment hiding: filters common offensive words, phrases, and emojis.

  • Advanced comment filtering: expands coverage to more comments that may contain spam or offensive language.

  • Hidden message requests: moves message requests that may contain scams or offensive language into a hidden folder.

  • Custom words and phrases: lets the account define its own words, phrases, numbers, and emojis to hide in comments, message requests, or both.

The Help Center also notes that hidden comments remain included in the total comment count and the sender is not told that the comment was hidden. Advanced filtering has an important exception: comments from people you follow, and people who follow you, are not hidden by that setting. That exception matters for brands with large creator, ambassador, or customer communities.

Build a useful custom Hidden Words list

The best custom list is short enough to audit and specific enough to avoid suppressing real demand. Add patterns because they repeatedly cause harm, not because a single uncomfortable comment appeared.

  • Known impersonation phrases and fake customer-support contact details.

  • Repeated crypto, follower-selling, recovery-service, and unsolicited collaboration pitches.

  • Competitor or affiliate URLs posted only to siphon traffic.

  • Campaign-specific slurs, abusive phrases, or coordinated attack language.

  • Phone-number, WhatsApp, Telegram, and wallet-address patterns used by scammers.

  • Emoji combinations that repeatedly appear in bot comments on your account.

Avoid broad commercial terms such as “price,” “shipping,” “refund,” “scam,” or “discount.” Those can signal objections and support needs. Hiding them may produce a cleaner feed while removing the comments most likely to reveal why shoppers are not buying.

Also avoid copying a universal profanity list and assuming it works worldwide. Slang, misspellings, reclaimed language, and multilingual comments make static lists brittle. Start narrow, review actual hidden content, then expand from evidence.

Where Hidden Words falls short for advertisers

Context changes the correct action

“Your sizing is crazy” might be criticism, confusion, or enthusiastic slang. “Is this a scam?” is usually a trust objection worth answering. “Message this account to recover your money” is likely an actual scam. A keyword appears in all three examples, but the business response should be different.

Ad comments arrive with campaign context

A buyer asking “does this work?” expects an answer tied to the exact product, claim, and creative above the thread. Static filtering has no approved product knowledge and cannot distinguish one promotion from another. That gap becomes expensive when several ads and creator identities are live at once.

Filtering does not close the conversation

After the noise is removed, the highest-value comments remain: availability questions, objections, comparison questions, support issues, and purchase intent. Those comments need a useful public answer, a private handoff when details are sensitive, and an escalation path when the situation requires judgment.

Use a three-layer Instagram moderation system

  1. Layer 1 — native filtering: use Hidden Words for unambiguous abuse, familiar spam, and account-specific scam patterns.

  2. Layer 2 — contextual triage: classify each remaining comment as a buyer question, objection, support request, sensitive escalation, or harmless conversation.

  3. Layer 3 — human judgment: route safety, medical, legal, chargeback, harassment, and high-stakes customer issues with the original context attached.

This model protects the thread without treating every negative word as a threat. It also makes the operation measurable: the team can review false hides, response time, escalations, private handoffs, and sales influenced by the conversation.

For the manual hide and unhide mechanics, use Exerta’s guide on how to hide Instagram comments. Hidden Words is the preventive layer; the operating model decides what happens next.

Connect Instagram comments to DMs and sales

A public reply is often only the first step. Questions involving order numbers, addresses, account details, or a personalized recommendation belong in DM. The handoff should preserve the original comment, the ad or post, the product involved, and the reason the conversation moved private.

  1. Answer the safe part of the question publicly so other shoppers benefit.

  2. Invite the customer into DM only when privacy or a longer exchange is genuinely useful.

  3. Carry the ad, product, and comment context into the private conversation.

  4. Use approved brand knowledge for routine answers and clear guardrails for offers.

  5. Escalate edge cases without asking the customer to repeat the story.

  6. Tie the interaction to clicks, recovered checkouts, or support resolution where possible.

The private workflow is covered in more depth in Exerta’s Instagram DM automation guide. The important point is continuity: moderation, reply, DM, and conversion should be one traceable journey.

How Exerta extends Instagram Hidden Words

Exerta adds contextual comment handling on top of the native safety layer. Its AI employees can hide harmful comments, reply to legitimate questions in the brand’s voice, and route sensitive cases to a person. The same brand knowledge can be used across Instagram, Facebook, TikTok ad comments, supported DMs, and website chat.

That broader coverage matters during launches and ad spikes. A static list does not get tired, but it also does not answer anyone. A human team understands context, but it cannot watch every thread at all hours. Contextual automation handles the repeatable middle while leaving high-stakes judgment with the team.

Brands should still keep Hidden Words enabled. Native and third-party layers solve different parts of the problem. Use native tools as the first screen, contextual automation for classification and response, and humans for exceptions.

Metrics that reveal whether moderation is working

  • False-hide rate: legitimate comments incorrectly suppressed by native or custom rules.

  • Missed-spam rate: harmful comments that remained visible long enough to affect the thread.

  • First-response time: how long genuine questions wait for an accurate answer.

  • Escalation accuracy: whether sensitive cases reach the right person with enough context.

  • Private handoff completion: whether comment-to-DM conversations reach a resolution.

  • Attributed outcome: clicks, recovered sales, or support resolutions connected to the original interaction.

Frequently asked questions

Does Instagram notify someone when their comment is hidden?

Instagram’s Help Center says the sender is not notified. Hidden comments remain in the total comment count, so the count can be higher than the number of comments visible to other people.

Is advanced comment filtering on by default?

Instagram documents automatic comment hiding as on by default, while advanced filtering is off by default and can be enabled. Check the actual account because defaults and eligibility can change.

Can Hidden Words filter message requests?

Yes. Instagram provides a setting that places message requests likely to contain scams or offensive language into a hidden requests folder. The Help Center notes that support varies by surface, so review these requests in the app.

Should a brand add competitor names to Hidden Words?

Only when the names consistently appear in promotional spam. Genuine comparison questions can be valuable sales objections. Contextual handling is safer than blanket hiding when real shoppers may use the same term.

What is the difference between Hidden Words and comment automation?

Hidden Words filters likely unwanted content. Comment automation decides how to classify, answer, hide, route, and measure the comments that arrive. One is a safety control; the other is an operating workflow.

Keep the useful comments visible—and useful

Instagram Hidden Words should remove predictable noise, not erase the conversation. See Exerta’s plans to add contextual replies, escalation, and cross-channel follow-up while keeping Instagram’s native protections in place.
